A designer-turned-editor who understands what commuters actually need
Maarten's journey into commuter bags started at TU Eindhoven, where he studied Industrial Design and became obsessed with solving everyday problems. After graduation, he didn't just study bags from the outside — he spent 8 years working directly with premium Dutch manufacturers in Tilburg, developing an intimate understanding of materials, construction methods, and what actually works for people rushing between meetings, trains, and offices.
During his product development career, he consulted on over 200 bag designs and conducted extensive field research with daily commuters across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and his native Tilburg. He learned that the right bag isn't about luxury branding. It's about solving real problems — distributing weight properly, protecting electronics, staying organized under pressure, and fitting into cramped bike racks and train compartments.
His transition to studyacademy B.V. as Senior Product & Lifestyle Editor was driven by a simple goal: share what he's learned so people can make informed choices about their everyday carry gear. He brings hands-on experience, technical knowledge of materials and construction, and an unwavering commitment to honest product analysis to every article he writes.
What Maarten knows inside and out
Weight distribution, strap design, and load-bearing principles. He's spent thousands of hours ensuring bags don't damage your shoulders and back.
Vegetable-tanned leather, organic cotton, recycled synthetics, and other eco-friendly materials. Understanding durability and environmental impact.
The unique demands of Dutch commuters — bike racks, trains, stairs, weather. He knows what works in real-world daily use.
Padding, compartment design, and materials that protect laptops, tablets, and electronics without adding unnecessary bulk.
Stitching patterns, hardware selection, seam strength, and manufacturing processes. He understands how bags are actually built.
Honest evaluation of what works and what doesn't. No marketing spin — just real assessment based on years of hands-on experience.
Maarten doesn't write about bags in isolation. He writes about commuters. Real people with real challenges — protecting their laptop on a crowded train, fitting everything they need into something that doesn't destroy their shoulders, finding something durable that won't fall apart after six months.
Every product review is grounded in his own experience using bags, testing materials, and understanding construction. He's spent enough time with bag manufacturers to know which corners are cut and which design decisions are legitimate compromises. That's where the credibility comes from.
The right bag isn't about prestige. It's about solving real problems for people balancing work, mobility, and lifestyle.
He doesn't just say a bag is "good." He explains why. Material weight and durability. How straps distribute load. Pocket layout and functionality. Seam construction. Whether the hardware will actually last. What weather it can handle. These details matter when you're carrying your laptop and work essentials every day.

Understanding the materials — where they come from, how they're made, how they'll age over time. This isn't guesswork. It's based on years working with manufacturers.
Examining how bags are built — seams, stitching patterns, hardware, reinforcement. Details that determine whether something lasts five years or five months.
No marketing narratives. Just what works, what doesn't, and who it's actually right for. He's not trying to convince you to buy anything.
